In our very digital world, there’s so much information about what’s healthy and what’s not, and it can be challenging to stifle through it all. From new trends to fads that fade, there’s always some piece of content telling us what health is and how to get it. But there are some things that not even your doctor will tell you about remaining healthy and not just how to get healthy. Remaining healthy is the marathon, whereas getting healthy is the sprint. Whether they won’t tell you because they assume you know or because they’re so busy and they overlooked it, they’re secrets that must be told. A lucky break for you though! We’re spilling the tea on the secrets today! We’re sharing some secrets that they didn’t tell you about so you can not only get into good health but keep it too.

1. Healthy Eating Is More Than Fruits And Vegetables

We always hear, “Eat your vegetables, eat your fruit.” But you actually need to eat more than fruits and vegetables. For example, you should be consuming whole grains, lean proteins, nuts, seeds, dairy and dairy alternatives, healthy fats, and fermented foods. Below you’ll find some examples of a few of these components and ways they benefit the body when consumed regularly.

Benefits of Whole Grains

  • Nutrient-rich
  • High in fibre
  • Supports weight management
  • Reduced risk of chronic disease

Benefits of Lean Proteins

  • Muscle growth and repair
  • Nutrient-dense
  • Helps with weight management

Benefits of Nuts and Seeds

  • Good for heart health
  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Good for bone health

Benefits of Dairy/Dairy Alternatives

  • Source of calcium
  • Source of vitamin D

It’s obvious that there are a lot of nutrients and vitamins in these parts of healthy eating, and there should be more emphasis on healthy eating as a whole and not just “eat your vegetables,” but for some reason, doctors don’t want to talk about it. All of these factors combined are what make up a well-balanced diet, and that’s what helps to maintain good health.

2. Go to therapy

Even if you feel that you don’t have any unresolved traumas and you have the most perfect life and absolutely nothing is wrong, it’s so important to go to therapy. It could be once a month even or every 8 weeks, but it’s an investment in yourself, and that should always be important. Going to therapy is often associated with something being “wrong,” but instead it’s actually a great tool for keeping life good. Therapy is often recommended by doctors for those who are going through a tough time, but it’s wildly beneficial for every human to talk about their thoughts and feelings. It’s a vital part of remaining healthy.

3. Dance More Often

Crank the tunes and break out those wicked moves because dancing more often can help you remain healthy. First, it’s movement, and we already know that movement is good. But, second, not only is dancing good in those ways, but also listening to music has so many great benefits, and letting yourself shake loose and feel free also has enormous benefits. Don’t be afraid to be silly and really get a good groove on.

4. Use Positive Self-Talk

All too often we’re down on ourselves, feeling like we’re not enough, not worthy, or not measuring up. We tell ourselves that we aren’t good enough, that we’re not working hard enough, or why can’t we just be better? But this negative self-talk is self-destructive. You must start talking to yourself with love and compassion. You must be gentle with yourself and allow yourself to feel whatever it is you feel. You must take care of yourself on the inside too.

5. Walk Outside Barefoot

Make sure that where you’re walking is clean and safe, but allow yourself the privilege of feeling the cool grass in between your toes. Watch the leaves dance in the sunlight while the trees gently sway. Take a moment and notice these gorgeous pieces of beauty that Mother Nature lets us experience. Not only is “grounding” (having your toes on the earth) beneficial for your mood and mental health, but it also fosters an attitude of mindfulness and learning how to be present and in the moment.

6. Plant a Garden

Planting a garden is more therapeutic than you might think. The process of digging in the dirt and planting a seed or plant and committing to taking care of it boasts so many benefits. It gets you outside and moving as well as you feeling proud of yourself when you see your hard work paying off and your garden is growing! It’s a satisfying feeling and can significantly contribute to self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-worth. It can also be a part of changing the way you talk about yourself as well, as in our previous point. By planting a garden, you’re telling yourself that you can take care of it, and then when the plant grows, you can tell yourself how fantastic of a job you did taking care of it. It’s as if you’re retraining your brain from being negative about yourself to reinforcing the positive so you actually stop and notice it.

Now You Know The Secrets

Now that you know these secrets, the real prize lies in what you can do with them. You can take these unbelievable secrets that your doctor isn’t going to talk to you about and put them into practice. Only you will benefit! These six secrets help your mental, physical, and spiritual health. They help you to connect with yourself and foster a deeper and more meaningful relationship with yourself. Finally, they support you in living the best life you can, because that’s the only life you should be living. By eating more than fruits and vegetables, going to therapy even when you’re not going through a hard time, busting out a dance move, talking to yourself with kindness, walking outside barefoot, and planting a garden, you can work towards sustaining good health while caring for your mental health at the same time.
