Why Some Parents Choose Not to Vaccinate Their Children

Childhood vaccination rates in the United Kingdom have fallen over the past ten years, and since 2021, none of the routine immunisations have reached the 95% coverage goal. This leaves many children vulnerable to sickness and disease that could have otherwise been prevented.

A new report from the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health shares the many persistent obstacles to vaccinations that go beyond hesitancy. These include things like challenges in booking appointments, clinics being in areas that are hard for people to get to, and NHS care that is inconsistent.

The study also points to problems like the lack of appointment reminders from doctors offices, missing digital vaccination records and parents’ facing the fear of being judged.

Differences in vaccine uptake are noticed among ethnic minority groups, low-income families, and migrant communities, often due to language challenges and limited access to digital resources.

The report suggests enhancing healthcare provider training, boosting pro-vaccine messaging on social media, introducing mandatory vaccination education in schools, and making access easier through more flexible appointment options and expanded clinic hours.
