Here’s Why British Food is Just a Bit Rubbish
Traditional British dishes are rooted in nostalgia. Dishes like roast beef, shepherd’s pie, and fish and chips are special in many people’s hearts. But despite these iconic dishes and their terrific flavours, British food isn’t winning any awards anytime soon.
Often dubbed bland, simple, and lacking innovation, British food, though peppered with great traditional dishes, is often not enough to change how people talk about it. Today we’re examining traditional British dishes and where they missed the boat regarding culinary innovation and awards.
Traditional British Dishes
Britain has several traditional British dishes that keep being made over and over again. They’re rooted in the nation’s history and tradition. Below are some examples of traditional British dishes. Afterwards, we’ll discuss their shortcomings and why British food gets such a bad rep.
- Fish and Chips: battered and deep-fried fish with thick-cut fries.
- Roast Beef and Yorkshire Pudding: Classic Sunday roast served with gravy and often vegetables.
- Bangers and Mash: Sausages with onion gravy and mashed potatoes.
- Cornish Pastry: A pastry filled with meat and vegetables.
- Black pudding is a type of blood sausage.
- Beans on Toast: This is exactly what it sounds like: beans atop a slice of toast.
Where traditional British dishes fall short
The shortcomings of traditional British dishes are deeply rooted in the presentation, taste, and uniqueness of the dish. When people are looking for new dishes to try or to cook at home, these are three factors that can greatly sway them. Does the dish look tasty? What sort of ingredients are used to infuse the flavor? We’ll be sharing some of the downfalls of British foods below.
Lack of Flavour
Traditional British food was developed at a time when access to spices and ingredients was limited. Therefore, what was developed was hearty, rich, and filling, as those were the most important factors at the time. This resulted in the food being plain and made with simple ingredients, mostly meat, potatoes, and root vegetables.
By not evolving with the culinary times, British food can be mushy and bland when compared to food from another country. The boiling and steaming of vegetables creates an unlikable texture with a diminished taste, and with limited spices and seasonings, it’s easy to see how people call British food plain, bland, and unappealing.
Though tradition reminds us where it started, and traditional food is no different, we can’t help but wonder if there’s a way to modernise traditional British dishes to incorporate various cooking methods and spices, herbs, and other tasty stuff.
Heavy Ingredients
Many people prefer to eat lighter rather than heavier, or perhaps once in a while heavy is okay but not every day, and British food relies largely on heavy and hearty ingredients. Most traditional British dishes are rooted in meat, potatoes, and vegetables, making it a really heavy and hearty meal.
With the emphasis on gut health and solving stomach issues, this may not be what everyone wishes to eat anymore. People may take some parts of these traditional meals and instead pair them with a light salad or sweet potato to help alleviate some of the heaviness.
Lack of Presentation Appeal
Unfortunately, traditional British food just doesn’t look delicious, and that can greatly impact how someone views it or whether or not they’re willing to try it. Most people will eat something that looks tasty regardless of what is in it, but if it doesn’t have that visual appeal, they’ll be less likely to give it a try even if it is delicious.
Cultural Stigma
Cultural stigma could play a major role in the shortcomings of traditional British dishes. British food already has a bad reputation, and if people know about that, they could already decide they dislike it even if they’ve never tried it.
The stigma of British food may be enough to keep them away for good. This is why it’s important to remain open-minded and at least try. Try new things because just because other people say it is bland and unappealing doesn’t mean that’s how you’ll feel about it. It might just be your new favourite meal!
Not Enough Vegetarian/Vegan Options
British food lacks innovation, creativity, and options. Rooted in a time when access to diverse ingredients was severely limited, there weren’t vegetarian or vegan options. However, British food has failed to modernise to this point and remains mostly carnivorous. There isn’t a lot of discussion surrounding how to make traditional dishes with a vegetarian or vegan flair.
Lack of creativity
If you’ve ever watched any sort of baking or cooking show, then you know what we mean about lacking creativity in terms of British foods. Many cultures incorporate herbs, spices, and locally grown and sourced ingredients to create heavenly dishes, and people who have that experience may frown upon the lack of creativity in the British culinary scene.
Not only does it lack the spices and seasonings that would kick it up a notch, but it’s not visually appealing either, often looking brown and plated in a plain way. It lacks innovation, modernisation, and an artistic touch.
Final Thoughts
In the end, the shortcomings of traditional British dishes contribute to and further perpetuate the stigma surrounding them. If many people talk about how bland it is or visually unappealing, people will be more likely to stay clear and have a negative perception of it even if they’ve never tried it.
The lack of more seasonings, spices, herbs, and various vegetables greatly affects the overall look, taste, and feel of the dish. Furthermore, if the dish doesn’t look appealing, most people will decide it isn’t appealing without giving it a chance. Britain’s culinary shortcomings lie in not taking these dishes and throwing a modern twist to them so that more people can enjoy them (vegans/vegetarians) and so that people will stop talking about how bland and mushy their food is and instead talk about how they tried a new dish and it was amazing.
What are your thoughts on British food? Have you tried any of the traditional dishes we mentioned? What were your first thoughts?
