Former Arsenal Football Player Thomas Partey Faces Multiple Rape Charges

Thomas Partey, once a key player on the field for the Arsenal football team, has been charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. The star player was born June 13, 1993 and found his passion for soccer from an early age. However, his current stardom is for less than ideal reasons. This shocking revelation has left the Premier League club facing harsh criticism as the team continued to allow him to be in the lineup despite being aware of the ongoing investigation and pending charges against him.

In July 2022, Telegraph Sport exclusively reported that a Premier League international had been arrested, but his identity can only now be made public.

At 32 years of age, Thomas Partey was one of the club’s top earners and had massive influence during three consecutive title bids and the club’s recent run in the Champions League semi-finals. The star player played in 35 matches from 2024 to 2025 and scored 4 goals and had 2 assists. In the season prior, he played in 14 games. In the 2022-2023 season he played in 33 matches and scored 3 goals. He rose to stardom from his sheer skill and determination.

The charges against Arsenal football player Thomas Partey stem from reports being filed by three separate women. The alleged incidents took place between 2021 and 2022.

The Ghananian, no longer under contract with Arsenal as of Monday, is expected to appear in Westminster Magistrates’ Court on August 5, 2025.

Jaswant Narwal from the Crown Prosecution Service said, “The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorized the prosecution of Thomas Partey for multiple counts of rape—after carefully reviewing a comprehensive file of evidence. Our prosecutors have worked closely with officers in the Metropolitan Police who have carried out the investigation to review the evidence and advise on the appropriate charges.”

Authorities confirmed that they first received a rape allegation against Arsenal football pro Thomas Partey in February 2022. Lead investigator, Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, said, “Our priority remains providing support to the women who have come forward. We would ask anyone who has been impacted by this case, or anyone who has information, to speak with our team. You can contact detectives about this investigation by emailing CIT@met.police.uk.”

A statement delivered by his lawyer, Jenny Wiltshire, read, “Thomas Partey denies all the charges against him. He has fully cooperated with the police and CPS throughout their three-year investigation. He now welcomes the opportunity to finally clear his name. Given that there are now ongoing legal proceedings, my client is unable to comment further.”

Even after the charges were made public on Friday, Thomas Partey remained listed on Arsenal’s website. There were even shirts with his name on still available to purchase even though his contract had expired and he was facing charges.

Critics are disappointed that the professional football team did not immediately suspend Thomas Partey from the team despite their awareness of the serious and ongoing investigation into the above allegations. They were quick to point out that in most other sectors, employees facing serious criminal allegations are suspended immediately once their employer learns of it. However, in contrast to this, Thomas Partey played several matches for Arsenal last season and added another 56 appearances during the previous 2 seasons while out on bail. He was also featured in three important games at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Despite the media avoiding naming Partey, fans were shocked and heckled abuse during his time on bail as his arrest became more widely known. At Arsenal home games, critics gathered to voice their significant dissatisfaction at the club for continuing to allow him to play. Fans were appalled. Various lawyers also shared the belief that the team should not have allowed Partey to play once it was clear that he was involved in a serious investigation.

Dino Nocivelli, a prominent lawyer with experience in high-profile abuse cases, specifically in sports, stated that he thought it was wrong that Partey was able to continue his working life and that it sends the wrong message for such serious offences. He thought that the player should have been suspended and investigated by the Football Association and not permitted to return to work until all investigations were over and he was cleared of all wrongdoing.

Football’s handling of rape allegations against players has differed over time. For example, Mason Greenwood from the Manchester United Football team was immediately suspended with full pay after his January 2022 arrest linking him to material published online. However, the charges, including the attempted rape and assault, were dropped in early February of 2023.

Another example of the discrepancy of how major football clubs handle serious allegations against players is former Manchester City defensive player Benjamin Mendy. He faced charges of rape and sexual assault in August of 2021. He was then suspended without pay until he left the club in June of 2023. Once acquitted, Mendy ended up winning an employment tribunal last year, ruling in his favour to receive the majority of his salary that the club was withholding.

Frustration continued to boil over with Thomas Partey continuing to play when Arsenal entered contract extension negotiations with him in the weeks leading up to the charges. Until that point, it was largely anticipated that the team wouldn’t pursue an extension of his contract. The contract officially ended on June 30 and the team is now in discussions to sign Christian Norgaard from Brentford as his replacement.

The Arsenal Football Club has declined to comment since the beginning and, along with the Football Association and the Premier League, is facing serious criticism and questions about allowing Partey to continue playing amid the allegations. The Football Association confirmed they received a complaint about the player in 2022 but found he did not pose a risk to adults or youth playing the sport. Last year, nearly 9000 fans signed a letter publicly calling out Arsenal to drop the player from the lineup immediately.

As a result of the ongoing controversy surrounding the Arsenal Football Club’s decision to let Partey continue to play, lifelong fans are struggling to remain dedicated to supporting the team and are calling for new, mandatory rules to be enforced when players are involved in such serious accusations.

It is believed that Arsenal followed legal advice during the entire time and maintains that because of legal proceedings, they can not comment on the matter.
