Are Brits Becoming Less Happy? The Data Suggests Yes
Happiness is everything, but if surveys, stats and a quick look around everyday life in Britain are anything to go by, the national mood has slipped a few notches. The famous stiff upper lip is now more of a weary sigh. With rising costs, stretched services, political churn and a constant sense of juggling too much with too little, Britain feels like a country running on low batteries.
Why are we becoming less happy?
A growing body of research shows life satisfaction in Britain is slipping. The latest national well-being data from the UK indicates that more people rate their well-being as low or very low, while those saying they feel very happy has dropped significantly in recent years. Younger adults, especially those under 35, are struggling the hardest on issues like financial insecurity, job instability and stress about the future. So, what’s dragging our happiness down? Here are some of the reasons we aren’t smiling as much in Britain today:
- Cost of living. Housing, food, transport, childcare and utilities all take bigger bites out of our incomes each year. Financial insecurity has become a major drain on national morale.
- Work and wages. Low pay, zero pay rises, and wage stagnation and higher unemployment rates among younger age groups isn’t a thing to be happy about. The 2025 Budget didn’t help. Higher taxes, frozen thresholds and shrinking real-term incomes mean many feel trapped on the hamster wheel.
- The weather. Brits love to moan about the weather, but months of grey skies, drizzle and dark evenings takes its toll. Seasonal affective disorder (SADs) is a real thing. Without the extra money to go on holiday and get our fix of Vitamin D, most people feel tired, irritable and stuck in a loop.
- Feeling stuck in a rut. Public services feel tired. The NHS is stretched. Opportunities feel thinner on the ground. High streets keep losing the shops that once gave towns character. People don’t just feel stressed, they feel stuck, and that lack of momentum chips away at day to day optimism.
A Country Looking Backwards
Nostalgia now seems to have taken hold, and not for the distant past but for years many of us can still remember. Large numbers of Britons say life felt better in the 1990s and 2000s, specifically 57% for the 1990s and 60% for the 2000s. Jobs paid well, university was free, getting on the housing ladder felt achievable, and the cultural scene was buzzing with festivals, subcultures, and the Spice Girls. Community felt stronger and the everyday world felt friendlier. Even if the memory is a little rose‑tinted, the longing says everything about how people feel today
How can we get a little happier?
So how can we bring some joy back? Aside from some change to tackle the bigger issues, often what makes most Brits happy are the smaller things in life. According to recent lifestyle surveys, these are some of the everyday things people say genuinely make them happy:
- A good night’s sleep
- A hot cup of tea or coffee in the morning
- Quality time with friends or family
- Laughing until your cheeks ache
- Getting into bed with freshly washed sheets
- Watching a sunrise
- A compliment or a small act of kindness
- A home-cooked meal or a favourite comfort food
- A peaceful moment alone, reading, resting or soaking in a bath
- The final day of work before a holiday
Sure, these little things aren’t going to make a massive difference to the overall happiness of Brits, but the little things can help you feel more positive in general and encourage you to plan for change in the future.
The bottom line
The evidence is clear. Brits are less happy than they used to be. The reasons range from the cost of living, low wages, and struggling public services to the weather and a lack of optimism for the future. But joy has not vanished. It is in the hot cup of tea, the sunrise, and quality time with loved ones. Perhaps staying afloat for now is not about grand changes, but the simpler things in life.
