Dogs are one of the best things to have ever happened to humans. Maybe we’re not fully deserving of these incredible creatures but we’re blessed by their presence. These wonderful animals bring so much love and joy into our lives.
Over the years, some questionable breeding has led to some strange-looking dogs. From the Hungarian Puli to the Mexican hairless Xoloitzcuintli – we’re here today to find your next canine friend!
Xoloitzcuintli

This hairless breed from Mexico definitely looks like a groomer has been a bit over zealous with the clippers but we can assure you – it’s actually been bred to look like that! Pronounced show-low-eats-queent-lee, Archaeologists have speculated that these dogs came to the New World across the Bering landmass, roughly 12,000 years ago. Their name is derived from the Aztec language: “Xolotl,” meaning the Aztec god of fire and escort of the dead to the underworld; and “itzcuintli,” meaning the Aztec word for dog.
Russian Borzoi

These funny horse-looking pups are slender with super thin faces. This wouldn’t ordinarily make them a strange looking dog but their bodies are absolutely HUGE – making them a very gangly looking horse dog.
Originally bred for hunting wolves in Russia, this sighthound is a fabulous addition to every household – unless you’ve got small animals that resemble wolves!
Azawakh

This tall, slender dog is from the African desert regions. They’re fiercely loyal dogs, and thoroughly attach with their families that it’s best for them to be placed with a permanent family at a young age. As with any dog, they should have at least 30 minutes of exercise per day.
They closely resemble a greyhound with a very lean, almost bony physique.
Neapolitan Mastiff

Mastino Napoletano is an Italian giant dog breed traditionally bred as guard dogs. With incredible loose skin folds that jiggle around when they move, they’re a fiercely protective dog with an even temper and strong protection tendencies.
Their skin can make grooming and washing difficult so it’s worth knowing and although they’re a calm breed, they are originally bred for protection so have strong instincts. They’re definitely better for a more experienced dog owner.
Puggle – Pug and Beagle Mix

An adorable mix of a pug and a beagle, this little mix up is one of the most fantastic family dogs you can find. With a playful and charismatic nature, all they want to do is please their owners. Fantastic around children and categorised as a small breed – they’re an easy first dog.
They do possess a stubborn streak from both sides of the breeds and can be burdened with hip and spine problems alongside a tendency for obesity.
Chinese Crested

This strange looking dog comes in both hairless and powderpuff varieties with silky fur that grows quite long – but is a hypoallergenic breed so great for allergy sufferers! With a max weight of 6kg they are a toy breed but don’t let this fool you. They’re super playful and lively and love nothing more than playing with their owners.
Even though they’re hairless, they do require regular grooming as they have a tendency to oily skin resulting in doggy acne!
Conclusion

A canine companion is an incredibly personal thing and most of the time the pup chooses you – or so they say! So let the dog distribution system pick for you and consider heading to your local dog shelter and seeing which puppies need a home!
